Acupuncture
How does this ancient practice of inserting hair-thin needles into various points along the body promote healing?
The origin of Acupuncture:
The practice of acupuncture is believed to have originated in ancient china, with archeological evidence dating back to 6,000 bce.
thousands of years of practice and discovery
Over time, the practice of acupuncture continued to be developed, with different schools of thought emerging.
Acupuncture is based on the time-tested theory that there are meridians, or channels, that span the body. Qi (vital energy) is believed to flow through these meridians. It is understood that many of our health disorders stem from a stagnation, deficiency, or excess of Qi.
By inserting needles into the various and specific points along these meridians, we are able to make contact with these channels and thereby help adjust the imbalances of Qi within. When these imbalances are addressed, the body can begin to restore its proper physiological function, essentially doing what it needs to do to heal itself.
What does acupuncture feel like?
An acupuncture needle is much smaller than the needles many of us are used to, in fact, 14 acupuncture needles can fit inside of just one injection needle!
The sensation of an acupuncture needle being inserted usually ranges from no sensation to a mild prick. Many of my patients are surprised when I check in on them after inserting a needle, often exclaiming, “You’ve already inserted it?!”
Once the needle is inserted and gently stimulated, the sensations felt can vary depending on the person. The most common sensations my patients have reported are a mild ache, heaviness, feelings of warmth and/or movement, and dullness. Many patients find it to be quite a relaxing experience.
